Most of you probably know how to write your own songs. But do you really know how to write a good song? Many of you are still resorting to the same old songwriting routine, churning out the same familiar tune. You are stuck in the rut of songwriting; sounding just the stylus caught revolving the same groove of an old scratched record. Arr..tut....arr..tut..

It is time to get up and get out from the trite way of songwriting. Let me share with you a starkly simple but a valuable tip on how to improve your songwriting craft.

What I want you to do is, firstly don't pressure yourself that you need not come out with a great tune each time you start out writing songs. Enjoy the songwriting process and your creativity will flow naturally.

When you are writing a song, don't let the recording device get into your way and disrupt the flow of your creativity. As you know inspiration can be fleetingly elusive. If don't you capture it there and then, you might lose it for good. So, just use a simple recorder and record the whole session, lock, stock and barrel. Just ignore the the recording machine. Let it run, you merely concentrate on creating your music. Focus on your instrument and be swept away by the waves of ideas. Soak yourself deeply into the composing process and let the recorder do its job. Your job is coming out with a good tune.

Most of the time, I find many people like to fiddle and fuss with the recording machine, rather than focusing on making sweet music with their instrument. They are too busy pausing, editing and replaying snatches of the recording mid way. All these distractions are a big no-no.

I know this is a ridiculously simple songwriting tip, but this is the very first hindrance to creating a good song.

Now, after you have finished, or satisfied or even too tired to go on, then it is time to stop. Switch off the recorder and walk away for a while. Forget about your composition or recording and do some other thing or take a rest.

Then with a fresher state of mind, play back and listen attentively to every second of recording which you have done earlier. You will be surprised there is so much ideas to be discovered and also to be discarded from your whole songwriting session. You can find both trash and treasure among the whole recording session. That's the reason why you need to record the whole composing process.

This is where you learn and become more aware of your own strengths and weakness in composing songs. This is how one can improve and avoid making the same mistakes again.

I find this simple songwriting tip very practical and effective which can help to improve your songwriting skills. This is one great way on how to write a good song. All the best.
