Executive Opinion Survey for World Economic Forum’s Global Competitiveness ReportCategory: Press Releases Article posted by: stephen manuel
Karachi, March 9th: The World Economic Forum’s annual Executive Opinion Survey (EOS) is in full swing. A team of the Competitiveness Support Fund, the partner institute of the World Economic Forum in Pakistan, conducted capacity building and information dispensing workshops at top business and administration schools in Karachi as part of their countrywide launch of the EOS. Workshops have so far been conducted in Lahore and Islamabad and more will be held in Peshawar, Faisalabad, Sialkot and Quetta.
The purpose of these workshops is to harness a knowledge based society by sharing the importance of EOS and making students aware of the indicators that gauge the well-being of participating countries. In Karachi, IQRA, Institute of Business Management (IOBM), Institute of Business Administration (IBA), and BIZTEK were the Universities targeted for participation in the workshops.
Students showed keen interest in the Global Competitiveness Index and attended the workshops in great numbers. The Global Competitiveness Index includes a wide range of socio-economic variables that capture the state of an economy.
"The workshops are an effective exercise of sharing information. Students need to be informed on the importance of the Executive Opinion Survey which asks pointed questions on the economy,” noted Professor Humayun Ansari of IBA.
Mr. Talib Karim, the Executive Director of the Institute of Business Management (IoBM), showed particular interest in the Survey; "The content of the Survey will tie in with the courses taught at IoBM and our research efforts in competitiveness and value creation” he emphasized.
High level business executives operating in Pakistan will be surveyed to capture their opinion on the business environment in which they operate. "Only CEOs and senior managers are capable of assessing the competitiveness of the economy, and so it is appropriate that the Survey seeks answers from them only, said Fahd Ali Raza of IQRA on the target respondents of the Survey.
The Competitiveness Support Fund is conducting the Executive Opinion Survey 2009 in Pakistan for the World Economic Forum. The Executive Opinion Survey, "The Voice of the Business Community” is a major component of The Global Competitiveness Report and provides the key ingredient that turns the Report into a representative annual measure of a nation’s economic environment and its ability to achieve sustained growth. Last year, 134 countries participated in the survey indicating the Survey’s wide geographical coverage. The annual Global Competitiveness Report is the most comprehensive and authoritative assessment of the comparative strengths and weaknesses of national economies, used by governments, academics and business leaders. The World Economic Forum’s rankings give a holistic view of the economies in comparison with each other. The rankings are calculated from "Soft Data” gathered by the Executive Opinion Survey; a comprehensive annual survey conducted by the World Economic Forum together with its network of Partner Institutes in the countries covered by the Report.
The Competitiveness Support Fund is working with the Pakistan Business Council, the Federal Pakistan Chamber of Commerce and Industry, various universities and other stakeholders in the country to carryout this survey. CSF’s strategy follows its ‘triple helix model’, which involves engaging the government and the private sector along with the media and the academia for long term economic growth in a knowledge based economy.
CSF supports Pakistan’s goal to have a competitive economy by providing input into policy decisions, working to improve regulatory and administrative frameworks and enhancing public-private partnerships within the country. CSF also provides technical assistance and co-financing for initiatives related to entrepreneurship, business incubators and private-sector-led initiatives with research institutes and universities that contribute to creating a knowledge-driven economy.
The Competitiveness Support Fund (CSF) is a joint initiative of the United States Agency for International Trade and Development (USAID), and the Government of Pakistan Ministry of Finance, established to reposition Pakistan’s economy in a more globally competitive footing.
USAID’s support for CSF is part of the $2.8 billion aid that the U.S. Government has provided to Pakistan since 2002 to improve economic growth, education, health, and governance and to reconstruct the earthquake-affected areas.
