23-year-old model Diana O'Brien landed in Shanghai on June 24th with hopes of expanding her career in one of the most competitive fields in the fame game - What she found barely two weeks later was her gruesome and untimely death. She was murdered at the hands of a knife-wielding 18-year-old thief who followed the unsuspecting beauty into her apartment building and stabbed her to death.

With the Olympics right around the corner in China, this comes as great shame to a nation who likes to pride itself on the safety of foreigners. The Liv Tyler lookalike was apparently unhappy with the limited modeling prospects that were presented to her. She was relegated to go-go-girl type work by the "agency" who recruited her on the internet from the small town of Saltspring Island, BC in Canada. "She thought that was weird . . . the agency had her dancing on the podiums." Actually, it's very "weird" to hear that a Canuck would be subjected to such requests.

As far as Western prostitutes go, they invariably come out of Eastern Europe, namely Russia and its former territories. The native English-speaking ex-pat numbers are so small in Shanghai that it's not uncommon to be separated by only one or two degrees to the whole community. That makes it almost too shameful to be caught servicing rich Chinese businessmen within the seedy confines of smoky karaoke bars.

I lived in Shanghai for nearly two years and only left at the beginning of 2007. When I was there, it was almost unheard of for white foreigners to fall victim to violent crimes. The few cases I'd heard about were so isolated, and the victim almost always knew the perpetrator.

As tragic as her end might seem, it wasn't the unethical modeling agency that killed the stunner, it was a random act of uncommon violence at the hands of a stranger.

Although this is not celebrity gossip, per se, it is related to the modeling industry, so this is for all of our model readers out there. Stay safe, lovelies!
