Taking a brief respite from teaching, I was visiting my dear friend Wendy Crabtree at the Meadows, outside of Atlanta. Enjoying the warm Georgia sun, chilled sweet tea and good company, Wendy said she had a lesson coming in. Feeling I should be someplace else for awhile, I stood up to leave when she asked me to sit down and wait with her. It was nice to see Ron walk through the door and we shook hands. He and Wendy retired to her office. A few minutes later, meeting finished, Wendy asked me if I’d like to observe the session. Ron told me I was welcome so I volunteered to push buttons and pull the targets. I was grateful for the invite and guest privileges to observe.
This is Ron’s story, just as it happened, proving once again that good intentions don’t always lead us to common sense.
Prudence suggests an alias in this case so I chose the name Ron. He said he had no problem with my telling his story. I replied that I appreciated that because possibly this may touch a chord in your shooting. Maybe more.
Ron was a solid AA shooter who earned his way into Master class, competing in many of the major events from FL to PA, NJ, MD and OH. He’d been to the National’s on many occasions and an equal number of times to the US Open, posting respectable scores along the way.
Wendy started him out on close and midrange targets. She wasn’t saying much, just observing quietly as good teachers do. She was evaluating, making mental notes. I kept my distance, giving them space to work and talk.
At first, Ron made short work of the standard, bread-and-butter targets. He was assertive behind the trigger and perceptively confident. Wendy opened the distance to the target by another 10 yards or so. Right on schedule the miss appeared. The reasons for Ron’s visit were beginning to surface. Expecting this to occur, Ron wasn’t surprised, affirming his presence here to learn why. After a few words of encouragement she took us both to the Meadows tower.
